The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), previously known as the National Open School, is a national-level board of education in India overseen by the Government of India. It was founded in 1989 by the Ministry of Education, which was formerly known as the Ministry of Human Resource Development.
The admission window for NIOS 10th and 12th exams in April/May 2024 has been launched for the academic year 2023-24. For the October exams, the admission window will open on September 16, 2023. Students can apply for admission for the 2023-24 session via the official website, nios.ac.in, by completing the NIOS admission form online.

NIOS ADMISSIONS GUIDE
The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) is an education board recognized by the Government of India, offering significant flexibility in subject choice and exam scheduling.
Course Preparation Students prepare for NIOS’s Secondary and Senior Secondary Courses. The Secondary level certification is equivalent to Class X, and the Senior Secondary level certification is equivalent to Class XII.
Eligibility Criteria
Secondary Level
- Candidates must have completed Class VIII and provide valid proof of being at least 14 years old to register.
Senior Secondary Level
- Candidates must have passed a Secondary Course from a recognized board (e.g., NIOS, CBSE, ICSE, or any State Board) and provide valid proof of being at least 15 years old to register.

- English, Hindi, Tamil, Mathematics, Science and Technology, Social Science, Economics, Business Studies, Home Science, Psychology, Indian Culture and Heritage, Painting, Data Entry Operations, Accountancy.
Senior Secondary Level
- English, Hindi, Tamil, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, Political Science, Economics, Business Studies, Accountancy, Home Science, Psychology, Computer Science, Sociology, Painting, Environmental Science, Mass Communication, Data Entry Operations, Introduction to Law, Library and Information Science.
Subject Selection Students can choose any combination of subjects offered by NIOS. To obtain a pass certificate at each level, learners must pass a minimum of five subjects, including at least one or a maximum of two languages. Additionally, learners can opt for two extra subjects, allowing them to study up to seven subjects in total.
School Timings The school operates from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for NIOS students.
Admission Procedure Application forms are available at the school’s Admissions Office or on the school website for Rs. 1000. Completed application forms must include:
- Three recent passport-size color photographs of the prospective student
- Copy of the student’s birth certificate
- Copy of the student’s Aadhar card
- Address proof of the parent (passport/ration card/driving licence/voter’s ID card)
- Transfer certificate and EMIS number from the previous school (if applicable)
- Academic record from the previous school (if applicable)
- Copy of the student’s community certificate
Processing may take up to two weeks. Eligible students will be invited for an interactive session with their parents/guardians. Selected candidates will be notified by phone/email and can then collect the Provisional Letter of Selection and pay the fees at the school office.
Withdrawal Policy The deadline for applying for a Transfer Certificate (T.C) will be announced via circular. Parents must submit the requisition letter by the specified date, or they will need to pay the first term fees for the upcoming academic year to receive the T.C.
